The Turkish-German Energy Partnership discussing the global hydrogen market at the WIN EURASIA Fair

At the WIN EURASIA trade fair in Istanbul on 6th June, the Turkish-German Energy Partnership (TGEP) participated in a panel discussion titled "Recent Developments and Lessons Learned in the Global Hydrogen Market Ramp-Up." Amid growing concerns about price pressures and intensifying competition among green hydrogen suppliers, the event highlighted the renewed interest from Germany's international energy partners, including Türkiye, in Germany's strategy to accelerate the hydrogen market. Notably, Germany's upcoming import strategy for hydrogen and its derivatives attracted significant attention.

As a panelist and representative of the TGEP at the event, Dr. Robert Stüwe, Head of H2 & Synthetic Energy Sources at the German Energy Agency (dena), had the opportunity to discuss Germany's emerging role as a major industrial consumer of green hydrogen. During the discussion, he emphasised two critical factors that are expected to drive demand for hydrogen imports:

  1. The European Union's Renewables Energy Directive, which mandates the substitution of 42% of grey fossil hydrogen with green hydrogen by 2030.
  2. The necessity of developing green lead markets for basic materials, such as steel, particularly in the construction sector, to complement existing production cost subsidies like Contracts for Difference (CCfDs).

Türkiye's ambitions to expand its electrolyser capacity and achieve economies of scale in hydrogen production by 2035 make it an ideal partner for collaboration on joint hydrogen projects with Germany. German foreign trade instruments, coupled with the country’s climate strategy, provide enhanced risk mitigation for green investments abroad, enabling higher involvement of local Turkish stakeholders in these projects.
