Unlocking Türkiye’s Biomass and Biogas Potential

27.11.2024

On 29th April 2025, the Turkish-German Energy Partnership (TGEP) hosted the online workshop “Potential of Biomass and Biogas Use in Türkiye – Lessons Learned from Germany”, bringing together over 80 participants from across government, academia, and industry. The event demonstrated the growing interest in bioenergy and the value of international cooperation in advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Türkiye currently imports nearly all of its natural gas. (%95,85 in 2024) In this context, the development of domestic biomass and biogas resources is not only a sustainability objective, but also a strategic priority for national energy security. Workshop participants agreed that Türkiye possesses substantial biomass potential, particularly within the agricultural sector, and that better utilisation of these resources could strengthen local energy supply and reduce dependence on imports.

The event presented the publication “Guide of Biomass Utilisation Feasibility”, which served as a resource for discussion. Participants explored a range of technical, regulatory, and economic aspects related to bioenergy development in Türkiye, including:

  • Methods for assessing and collecting biomass feedstock
  • Options for integrating biogas into existing gas infrastructure
  • Advanced technologies for biogas production and upgrading
  • Regulatory frameworks and policy lessons from Germany

Germany’s extensive experience with bioenergy provided a benchmark for Türkiye. Presentations from German experts demonstrated how long-term policy support, innovative technologies, and integrated sector planning have enabled the growth of a robust bioenergy market. These insights offered actionable guidance for Turkish stakeholders aiming to replicate and adapt similar approaches.

The workshop featured contributions from a wide array of experts, including representatives from Thüga AG, Fraunhofer IEE, Envitec Biogas, Ostim Enerjik, BIYOGAZDER, and Biyoyatder, among others. Participants highlighted supportive regulation, stronger cross-sector collaboration, and knowledge sharing as critical to accelerating progress.
