Green Hydrogen Task Force Study Tour Strengthens Turkish-German Cooperation
From 7th–9th April 2025, a Turkish delegation participated in a high-level study tour on green hydrogen in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), organised within the framework of the Turkish-German Energy Partnership (TGEP). The tour aimed to facilitate bilateral dialogue, deepen mutual understanding of hydrogen technologies and policy frameworks, and support the advancement of a sustainable hydrogen economy.
The delegation included senior representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MENR), the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA), the gas transmission system operator BOTAŞ, as well as private sector stakeholders and researchers. Among the participants were members of the Turkish Hydrogen Association (H2DER), Biga Hydrogen GmbH, BCS Enerji Mühendislik, Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mineral Research Agency (TENMAK), and TÜBİTAK.
Over the course of the three-day visit, the delegation engaged with German experts and institutions on key topics including:
- Regulatory frameworks and financing models for hydrogen infrastructure
- Production, storage, and transportation of green hydrogen
The study tour featured a variety of programme highlights, offering both strategic and technical insights:
- A technical workshop hosted by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), focussing on hydrogen regulation and market integration
- A site visit to the Port of Duisburg (duisport), exploring its role as a future hub for hydrogen logistics and imports
- Tours of industrial sites including Air Liquide and thyssenkrupp Steel, showcasing real-world applications of hydrogen in industrial decarbonisation
- A concluding visit to the RWE campus, featuring an exchange with Dr. Sopna Sury, Hydrogen Board Member at RWE, on large-scale project development and future market design
Throughout the programme, the Turkish delegation shared their experiences and strategies while gaining in-depth perspectives on Germany’s regulatory and industrial approaches to green hydrogen. The visit provided an opportunity to explore synergies and deepen collaboration in shaping a sustainable hydrogen future.
The Turkish-German Energy Partnership extends its sincere thanks to all hosts for their hospitality and contributions, and to the Turkish delegation for their active participation and valuable input.
